Babies 6 months old + and starting soft foods.
Being a Mum with a newborn baby can keep you so busy! Take time to look after yourself and get enough sleep. By the time your baby is 6 months old you may start to consider the diet suitable for your baby. Babies will begin trying soft foods at about 6 months old and no sooner. Milk or formula will still be the main food source until your baby is 12 months old. Babies can start drinking water in small amounts from 6 months old.
You may start to consider the many products and brands producing baby food available at the supermarket. Additionally, you may like to make your own baby purees if you have the time. I couldn’t have managed without a baby food steamer to make home made baby purees. I found freezing them helped me stay organised and then reheating in the microwave. I used freezing portion moulds. There is so much information created by mothers online about baby puree recipes these days or you can find books too.
This time is such a special time and there is nothing better than watching your child enjoy discovering their first taste of soft foods. Some children will experience allergies to some foods in this time, common allergy causing foods include cow’s milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts (such as cashew, walnut), wheat, soy, sesame, fish and shellfish.
If there is an allergy reaction to foods that persists see a G.P or Maternal Health nurse to get advice.
Here are some products that I found useful during this time.
